The proposals for the Grade 2 listed Pole Barn at Cumcatch Farm just outside Brampton, involved considerable negotiations with the local Conservation Officer. The final scheme involved the conversion of the existing barn and a new oak framed element. These buildings are linked via a single storey corridor which acts as the main entrance. New glazing to the North side of the building was set behind the existing cast iron structure retaining the character of the original barn structure. Oak was used extensively throughout the building, featuring as panelling to the external elevations as well as being expressed throughout the building interior for the principal structural elements and as framing for the glazed windows. The front elevation with unassuming entrance door into the building is contrasted with the large open glazed courtyard views to the rear. This provides an element of surprise and delight to the visitor when the door opens.
