West Lakes Science and Technology Park, Whitehaven, Cumbria.

Architects Plus won the commission for Pillar House in a limited competition to design a speculative office building, providing 4 flexible lettable spaces each with 5000 sq.ft. lettable area. The building was subsequently constructed and completed, but changing little from the initial concept proposals that won the competition.

The building is situated on one of the serviced plateaus within the successful technology park with open views to the coast and surrounding countryside.

The brief for the project was sympathetic to the existing science park but of individual design. The form for the building derived from a series of fractal derived equilateral triangles that were subsequently developed, refined and reflected in the floor plan and external roof supports. The building incorporated overhanging eaves, and sun louvres to provide shade to the extensive areas of glazing.
