This dense urban site was originally home to a Victorian Board school. Located in residential terraced streets close to the distinctive landmarks of Dixon’s Chimney and Shaddon Mill, it was important to retain the character of the site whilst providing a mixed residential scheme of affordable housing.
Key to the scheme was to provide the density of development to ensure affordability, while ensuring privacy through the careful arrangements of private gardens and semi-private courtyards.
Careful consideration was given to both the overall massing of the site using the architectural language of the former school; and to the detailing of the brickwork and stonework incorporating salvaged materials wherever possible.
