New Clubhouse, Lake Ullswater, Cumbria

The brief for the RIBA Competition required a new clubhouse on the banks of Lake Ullswater for a private yacht club. The new building would provide updated facilities as well as a robust strategy to accommodate potential future flooding. Architects Plus’s winning design and presentation was chosen over 180 other competition entries.

With a curved form designed to offer 360 degree views over the lake and surrounding fells, the feedback was seen as an iconic response to the brief that satisfied the club’s functional requirement, as well as respond to likely flooding events, size and cost criteria. The judges commented that “the scheme stood out as a potential contender from the outset”. The judges admired the strong form, the internal arrangement, the maximisation of views and considered that this was a particularly appropriate response to the site and context.
