Architect Plus were appointed via the Cumbria County Council Framework, together with consultants Waterman Group and McGowan Miller to complete the feasibility studies and initial design proposals for a new 80 place SEN facility to be located in within the grounds of the existing Ulverston Victoria High School. Following a thorough interrogation of central government guidelines to help derive the brief, a number of design options for the site and building were developed that were closely reviewed with the end users of the facility. Regular user group meetings were also held to reach an optimum standard.
The project requirements were transferred to a ‘Design & Build’ contract with Architects Plus retained as ‘Client’s Technical Advisor’. Seddon Construction won the project on a competitive tender basis through the North West Construction Hub framework, with project completed in 2019.
The proposals include 10 no. ‘classbases’ and associated therapy facilities requiring a sensory room, a therapy suite, hydrotherapy swimming pool, physiotherapy rooms, and rebound therapy room. The building also includes a multipurpose hall, library and specialist science teaching facilities, plus catering kitchen for serving meals to both pupils and staff.
