As part of the central government programme for ‘Universal Infant Free School Meals’ Architects Plus were commissioned to review the school’s catering and dining facilities, which resulted in a significant kitchen and dining room extension together with a complete over haul of the existing building’s mechanical and electrical services. The extension had to be sited on the principal elevation of the imposing Victorian School building and this required a sensitive review of the possible design solutions to achieve a design which was acceptable in terms of practicality and aesthetic quality. The project naturally required detailed negotiations with both the conservation and planning officers. A strong visual connection with the streetscape that was lacking with the old façade has also been achieved which provides a more welcoming frontage to the School.
