Client Name:
James Rennie School
Carlisle, Cumbria

James Rennie School is an outstanding school for pupils aged 3 to 19 who have severe or profound learning disabilities and live in the North of Cumbria.

Winning the designation of ‘specialist communication school’ status, the associated funding enabled the creation of a new ‘Communications Building’ to provide support, training and IT facilities for the pupils and staff at the school, whilst provide a space for training opportunities to outside bodies. Architects Plus were appointed to design the new facility and continue this through to construction.

In architectural terms the building makes a bold statement with its pyramid roof structure, that includes high level windows to allow natural light and ventilation into the large hall. Timber pergolas and fabric tensile structures surround the main brick building, providing sun shading to the large windows as well as sheltered play areas.

Further works were later completed that provide a new feature entrance, improved reception area, refurbishment of the main school hall including acoustic enhancement, alongside new soft play and sensory room.
