Architects Plus were commissioned to complete a new On-Call Fire Station and improved Highways Depot on the site of the existing Cumbria County Highways Depot, along Station Road, Bootle. The new building contains shared welfare and administration accommodation for both the Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and Cumbria County Council Highways. The project was designed to meet the initiative set by Cumbria County Council for ‘Better Places for Work’. The design also included a new Salt Barn facility, which can accommodate up to 50 tonnes of salt. This is now being used as a satellite facility for the “topping-up” of gritting vehicles whilst on specific routes away from the main centres of salt storage held elsewhere in the county.
