Walkmill Court, Whitehaven
This scheme was carried out for Home Group, a registered social landlord.
The client owned an existing outdated sheltered housing development that was judged uneconomic to renovate and upgrade to suit current needs. The idea was to replace this with a new development of flats.
Once appointed, Architects Plus identified an area of adjacent land also owned by the client. This enabled the existing occupied building to be retained until the new development was completed. Tenants were then moved to the new units and the existing building demolished to permit additional development of the site. The total development provides 20 flats and a further 11 bungalows for elderly residents. These provide modern, energy efficient, secure and accessible housing in private grounds arranged around a large landscaped courtyard.
The residents have the use of community lounge & kitchen facilities and on on-site warden. The houses and flats were all designed & built to comply with the requirements of Lifetime Homes and the Code for Sustainable Homes and are adaptable to suit the current and future needs of their tenants .
