University of Cumbria - St Martin's College
The Learning Gateway formed the latest phase of the Carlisle Campus development for St Martin’s College (now the University of Cumbria).
This £4.0m project houses a 150 seater lecture theatre, a number of seminar rooms and extensive, open and flexible resource areas. Equipped with the latest wireless technology the Gateway provides state of the art teaching from formal lectures to informal discussion groups. As the original brief document states “through learning technology embedded in a designed learning space, students - remote or on campus - will be able to access and create high quality learning resources, engage in discussions, receive support from peers and tutors, submit assignments and receive feedback”.
The building has been designed to reflect the forward thinking of the brief with extensive use of glazing allowing the activities within to be seen and the framed structure and full height lightwell giving the interior an open and light atmosphere.
The Gateway is designed to be maintenance free and, through the use of natural ventilation, economical to run.
Sir Martin Harris, who opened the building in June 2006, said: “It is a showcase of what St Martin’s has achieved and a forerunner of what the University of Cumbria will achieve”.
