The Crichton Library, Crichton Estate, Dumfries
Located on the site of a former mental health hospital at The Crichton Estate, Dumfries are the University of Glasgow, the University of West of Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway College, the Scottish Agricultural College and various private businesses - a unique situation in the UK.
Already with approximately 1,200 students at Crichton, the Campus is outgrowing its existing library facilities and a new larger facility is required.
The brief for this project was to investigate the possibility of undertaking a radical makeover of an old laundry building to provide an imaginative and cost effective solution for the provision of a modern library.
At an estimated cost of £3.25m the accommodation will include a main library, seminar rooms and student advisory service all equipped with the latest wireless technology.
It is believed that an exciting contemporary building can be created at two thirds of the cost of a new build while at the same time producing aesthetic as well as functional benefits and further enhancement of the Campus.
