Cairnsmore House, Dumfries

Cairnsmore House was an unattractive brick built 'box' constructed some time ago to house the Theatre Sterile Supplies Unit serving the nearby Dumfries and Galloway Infirmary. Located on The Crichton Estate, an outstanding conservation area, demolition would have been an obvious choice. However planning constraints on the site rendered a replacement building impossible. The estate now houses a business park and various university and commercial interests. Rather than lose the potential commercial space Architects Plus was tasked with converting the existing building into an attractive modern office suite through internal remodelling and external overcladding. Timber cladding was selected to create a natural feel within the parkland setting whilst roof and windows were of modern design to provide a contemporary feel. The client and tenant are very pleased with the outcome of this project.
